2024 marks the 5th annual Global Volunteer Month, a celebration throughout April that recognizes the profound impact each of us can make through volunteering. Independent Sector member Points of Light is celebrating the power of community, service, and the ripple effect collective action creates around the globe.
Recent trends suggest a troubling decline in volunteerism, which means now is the time to jump into action with a renewed sense of urgency. According to a joint report from the Census Bureau and AmeriCorps, formal volunteering in America saw a 7% decrease between September 2020 and 2021, reaching its lowest point in decades. You can start to see the critical need for collective action to reverse the tide and reignite the spirit of service in communities.
“During Global Volunteer Month, we recognize the profound impact of people who dedicate their time and talent to social change, and also recognize the immense needs facing communities around the world,” said Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO, Points of Light. “Points of Light is committed to uplifting volunteering and service as a pathway to solve problems, strengthen communities, and bridge divides to create a stronger civic society.”
It’s going to take all of us — nonprofits, companies, government officials and individuals — rolling up our sleeves and getting involved. Global Volunteer Month offers different ways to make a meaningful impact, from individual acts of kindness to community-wide initiatives. There’s something for everyone.
Each April, Independent Sector announces the latest value of a volunteer dollar to show the contributions individuals and organizations have made in our communities, and to acknowledge the millions of individuals who dedicate their time, talents, and energy to making a difference.
And within Global Volunteer Month, National Volunteer Week takes place from April 21 to April 27 and provides a platform to honor volunteers and inspire others to join the movement. Good Deeds Day happens on April 14. Since 2007, this day of action has spurred millions of people and thousands of organizations from 110 countries to unite annually to volunteer and #DoGood.
In addition to participating in these events, here are four things you can do to jump in and join the movement throughout Global Volunteer Month:
- Take the Pledge: Declare your commitment to volunteering by taking the pledge to become a Global Volunteer Month Hero and receive easy reminders with ways to activate throughout April.
- Spread the Word: Amplify the message of Global Volunteer Month, starting April 1, with the worldwide Social Surge. This easy-to-use social media toolkit equips you with ready-to-share digital assets.
- Nominate: Shine a light on inspiring volunteers by nominating them for the Daily Point of Light Award, acknowledging their extraordinary contributions in communities around the world. Nominations for this award are accepted year-round.
- Volunteer: Discover in-person and virtual volunteer opportunities on Points of Light Engage, the world’s largest digital volunteer network, with your favorite cause or organization.
Global Volunteer Month is a celebration, but it’s also a call to action. In a time when bridging divides is essential, April is a time to be a part of igniting a movement of service. Together, we can turn the tide of declining volunteerism and build stronger, more resilient communities.
