(WASHINGTON, January 7, 2016) — Today, Independent Sector releases the following statement from Candy Hill, interim co-CEO and vice president of communications and marketing:
“Independent Sector applauds the Internal Revenue Service for hearing the concerns expressed by the charitable and philanthropic community and withdrawing a proposal to have charitable organizations collect and report to the IRS donors’ Social Security numbers. Independent Sector voiced its concerns about the proposed rule, and also joined the National Council of Nonprofits and more than 200 nonprofit organizations to call on the IRS to withdraw this proposal. The regulation would have exposed the public to increased risk of identity theft, imposed significant costs and burdens on nonprofit organizations, and created public confusion and disincentives for donors to give to worthy causes.”
