(WASHINGTON, October 10, 2019) – The following statement is from Daniel J. Cardinali, president and CEO of Independent Sector:
“We at Independent Sector were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one the giants of our nation’s philanthropic community, William S. White.
His commitment to advancing the work of philanthropy was felt on a national and state level, having been a founding member of the Council on Foundations, and Chairman of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation with a particular focus on civil society, education, the environment, and Flint, Michigan.
Bill’s connection to Independent Sector was deep and longstanding, as well. From 2004 – 2007, he was among the nonprofit and philanthropic leaders who comprised the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, established by Independent Sector in 2004 to develop recommendations to guide Congress in improving the governance and oversight of charitable organizations and ensure high standards of ethics and accountability.
He also served on IS’ Board of Directors from 2004 to 2010.
The tremendous impact of his work and commitment to strengthening our sector and better enabling our service to communities was aptly captured in a special tribute video produced by the Council of Michigan Foundations, shown just during their recent Annual Conference. We mourn Bill’s passing and celebrate his enduring service.”
