“Independent Sector, the leading voice of the charitable community in the United States, believes the fiscal year 2018 budget proposal released today by the Trump Administration puts America on the wrong track.
The President’s budget, while non-binding, is at odds with our Statement of Beliefs Regarding Federal Tax and Spending Policies. Using this framework as a lens, we believe that the deep and indiscriminate cuts proposed to non-defense spending would negatively affect nonprofit organizations, our capacity to pursue our missions, and the communities and individuals we serve.
The budget signals an unprecedented federal retreat from critical programs that support the nation’s most vulnerable populations and build vital communities.
The budget also affects policies that cut across the entire sector. Specifically, tax reform proposals included in the budget would reduce giving to all charities, including religious institutions, by $13 billion.
As tax and spending debates continue, we urge policymakers to work toward fiscal policies that lift up the inherent value of all individuals, families, and communities. We stand ready to work in partnership with both the Administration and Congress to ensure that our federal fiscal priorities reflect the values and the aspirations of the American people.”
