National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP)
National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP), based in Washington, DC, was founded in 1997, which means they’ve pretty much been an IS member since their inception! NCFP emerged out of an unfilled need for an integrated national reserve of resources for family philanthropy. As evidence of how significant the family philanthropy niche is, family foundations account for over half of all private foundations and 44% of all foundation holdings. NCFP is led by its founding president, Ginny Esposito.

Skoll Foundation
It’s kind of hard to believe that Skoll Foundation is about to celebrate its 20th year, and we’re delighted that they’ve been a steady partner as IS members for the majority of that time. We feel quite a kinship with the foundation founded by Jeff Skoll and Sally Osberg. Skoll, the foundation’s namesake, cites IS founding Chair John W. Gardner as a major influence on his philosophy for doing good in this world. Gardner himself gave Skoll and Osberg the following advice when they started the foundation: “Bet on good people doing good things.” His faithfulness to that advice earned him our prestigious John W. Gardner Leadership Award in 2012. The honor put him in exclusive company with folks like Colin and Alma Powell, Raul Yzaguirre, Bill Drayton, Bryan Stevenson, and now, Angela Glover Blackwell! The foundation is based in Palo Alto, CA and has been led by Interim President Richard Fahey since May 2018.

Communities In Schools
We’ve been fortunate to count Communities In Schools (CIS) as one of our members for a decade! We’re also fortunate that the organization spawned our current leader, Dan Cardinali, who has now been with us for over two years. Dan’s leadership tenure at Communities In Schools was an interesting one in that he succeeded the organization’s founder. That particular leadership transition was one of very few highlighted earlier this year by The Bridgespan Group in their research on founder transitions. CIS Founder Bill Milliken began the organization in the 1970s in New York City with a focus on fostering healthy relationships between children and members of their greater community in public school environments. CIS is now headquartered in Arlington, Virginia with affiliates in 25 states and DC that work directly in 2,300 schools. They have been led by Dale Erquiaga for two years as of this month!

92Y
92Y has a ton of history. Originally founded in 1874 as a center for Jewish civic life, 92Y has grown into a hub serving people of all races and faiths by bringing members of the community together through programs spanning performing and visual arts, literature, and culture; education opportunities for adults and children; public talks on a range of topics; and health and fitness activities. In addition to all that, it remains an important pillar of Jewish life in the Carnegie Hill neighborhood and beyond. The organization has been led by Henry Timms since 2013. Timms is currently a member of our Board and now the co-author with Jeremy Heimans of an acclaimed book called New Power. Along with the United Nations Foundation, 92Y co-founded Giving Tuesday in 2012. The day of giving always takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (so this year’s is November 27!) and has become the biggest day of the year for charitable donations in the U.S. and across the globe.

Center for New Leadership at Marlboro College
If the name of this Vermont-based IS member is unfamiliar to you, you may recognize the association that it recently joined forces with: Common Good Vermont. Common Good Vermont, the association that has served Vermont’s booming nonprofit sector since 2008, is now a program of the Center for New Leadership (CNL) at Marlboro College. The two merged in October 2018 in an aim to become the state’s unified professional development source for mission-driven organizations. Morgan Webster, who has led Common Good Vermont since 2015 continues to serve as director of the program under CNL’s purview. CNL’s interim director is Kate McGowan, who has directed the center since January 2018.

Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofits (HANO)
HANO was founded in 2006. Hawai’ian nonprofits rely on HANO for a wide variety of vital services, like trainings, strategic planning services, and advocacy resources. In addition to furnishing resources to empower individual nonprofits to advocate for their work and the communities they serve, HANO is itself an influential advocacy force on behalf of nonprofits statewide. HANO is based in Honolulu and has been led by Lisa Maruyama since 2008.

FUSE Corps
FUSE Corps partners with local governments to help urban communities thrive. It was founded in 2013 and has locations in San Francisco and Boston. James Weinberg has led the organization since 2014. Like many of the organizations in this month’s crop of anniversary members, we have a pretty close connection to FUSE Corps via its leader. That’s because Weinberg was a loyal attendee of our annual conference, with an active attendance streak of 15 years as of last year. Though we retired the IS conference brand after last year’s convening in Detroit, our inaugural trip out with its successor—Upswell—is happening in just two weeks in Los Angeles! For the record, if James makes it out for our first Upswell, we’ll let him count it toward his active attendance streak. 🙂

Kidney Cancer Association
The Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) is the world’s first international charity dedicated specifically to the eradication of death and suffering from renal cancers. With members in more than 100 countries, it is also by far the largest kidney cancer charity. KCA was founded in Chicago in 1990. As a testament to the reach of its network, it remains incorporated as a nonprofit in the state of Illinois, but also has leadership in Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, and South Carolina. KCA is led by Gretchen Vaughan.
