Independent Sector’s members represent the variety of ways that working toward the common good happens in our country, and they reflect an array of unique visions for making a better tomorrow.
Each month, we get to ring in a number of member-versaries. Check out this month’s anniversaries, and spend some time learning more about each of these organizations!
25 years
Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC
As a member of 25 years, Advancing Justice | AAJC has been with IS for the majority of its 27-year history. In that time, the organization has worked to advance civil and human rights for Asian Americans, and to promote a fair and equitable society for all. The organization, an affiliation of five organizations that serve the Asian American/Pacific Island (AAPI) community nationwide, is based in Washington, DC and led by John C. Yang. Yang joined Advancing Justice | AAJC in early 2017, succeeding the civil rights organization’s leader of seven years, Mee Moua. As an advocate for the AAPI community—the U.S.’s fastest growing racial group—Advancing Justice | AAJC has been a vocal critic of policies impacting immigration and the U.S. Census under the current administration.

30 years
Boy Scouts of America
Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has been an IS member for 30 years. Although that’s a significant amount of our history, theirs, as you may know, is comparatively longer. BSA was founded in Irving, Texas in 1910, where its headquarters remains today. Since 2015, the scouting organization with over 2 million participants nationwide has been led by Michael B. Surbaugh. Surbaugh is the 13th Chief Scout Executive. The organization recently celebrated the formal dedication of the Philmont Scout Ranch National Scouting Museum in Cimarron, New Mexico.
