New national survey finds nonprofits outpace government, media, and big business on trust, but concerns emerge about government pressure and high-net-worth philanthropy
(WASHINGTON, July 10, 2025) – Today Independent Sector released a new national study that shows nonprofit organizations remain the most trusted sector in the United States.
Now in its sixth year, the Trust in Nonprofits and Philanthropy study is the largest of its kind, capturing the perspectives of the American public with a nationally representative survey of 3,000 U.S. adults as well as online focus groups. The study is commissioned by Independent Sector and conducted by Edelman Data and Intelligence.
Key findings include:
- 57% of Americans report high trust in nonprofit organizations, which is unchanged from 2024. Trust in nonprofits is higher than in any other sector, including small businesses, the military, philanthropy, government, or the media.
- Nonprofits are also perceived as more competent and ethical than foundations, corporations, media, or government.
- Trust in high-net-worth philanthropy is limited, with only 29% of Americans expressing high trust in wealthy individuals engaged in philanthropy. This appears to be driven by concerns over philanthropists’ motivations for giving and a perceived disproportionate influence over nonprofit operations.
- While 69% agree that nonprofits and government must work together to solve societal issues, 59% feel the two often have conflicting priorities, and some worry that government funding may make it harder for nonprofits to stay true to their missions.
“In a time of deep polarization, Americans continue to place more trust in nonprofits than in any other sector,” said Akilah Watkins, president and CEO of Independent Sector. “But trust is not something we can take for granted. People want to see and understand the real benefits that organizations bring to their lives. Preserving and strengthening trust means showing up with transparency, accountability, and a deep commitment to the communities we serve.”
Dr. Watkins continued, “Trust is vital to bridging differences in a divided America. As trusted partners, nonprofits are essential to government, business, and philanthropy in engaging and uplifting communities.”
The report emphasizes that trust is the foundation for nonprofit effectiveness—and that trust is what makes it possible for charitable organizations to connect with local communities to meet everyday needs and create meaningful impact.
