“The only reason people want to hear from people like me [is] because you trust me. You don’t expect me to be perfect, but I don’t lie to you. But every institution that we trust lies to us…These streets will speak for themselves, whether I’m alive or dead. I trust you guys.”
Those words are from comedian Dave Chappelle, whose searing new stand-up special pulls to the surface uncomfortable truths about our current culture. Trust is an essential – and too frequently absent – measure of how we are collectively experiencing our world right now. From COVID-19 relief and recovery to our reckoning with racism, we are reconsidering all our relationships with each other, with institutions, and with our country’s social contract.
Trust is vital to our ability to fulfill our missions, create lasting systems change, and ensure all people in the U.S. thrive. So, you’re invited to Pop-Up #4 for an honest conversation about trust. We’ll explore vital themes from Independent Sector’s anticipated release of a survey on trust in civil society. We’ll dig deeper to understand how a Nobel Peace Prize winner used trust to end a civil war. And we’ll explore how trust will enable philanthropy, nonprofits, and communities to come together – or split apart — during our current crises and confront where we have critical work to do.
