The 19th Amendment — ratified a century ago on August 18th and certified on August 26th — marks a pivotal time that commemorates the evolution of American voting rights. While this milestone celebration is symbolic of the progress that’s been made, it also illustrates the work that remains in ensuring that the constitutional right to vote is extended to all who are eligible.
In recognition of the centennial anniversary of the nineteenth amendment and Women’s Equality Day, Independent Sector will facilitate an inclusive conversation with women who are spearheading electoral advocacy for nonpartisan nonprofits. The 60-minute program will explore the intersection of race, gender and American democracy and the critical role nonprofits must play to connect the communities we serve with local experience and elected leadership to ensure equal access for voter participation.
Exclusion in the democratic process is more apparent now than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the American electoral system in ways previously unimaginable. Immediate action must be taken to prevent the disenfranchisement of voters who have been severely and disproportionately affected by the health and economic crisis. Congress must appropriate 3.6 billion in emergency funding to provide safe in-person and mail-in voting options to ensure that elections nationwide are conducted in ways that are safe, secure, and in compliance with public health guidelines.

As the nation’s third largest employer, nonprofits are able to organize 12.3 million employees and mobilize networks of donors, volunteers, and constituents across 1.5 million organizations.
Nonprofit advocacy is our nation’s best defense to ensure that every eligible voter is afforded the opportunity to safely cast their ballot.
