Jimmy Simpson, Jr. grew up in both the rainforests on the Big Island of Hawaii and the cornfields of rural Nebraska. He now bridges those worlds in the Bay Area, where he helps uplift data and narratives to strengthen communities. Jimmy is a passionate advocate for education and social justice and has been a speaker at some of the largest education conferences in the United States, including the American Superintendent’s Association’s National Conference of Education, the North American Association for Environmental Education, and the California Department of Education’s Equity Summit. Jimmy’s current work with the national nonprofit, YouthTruth, gives him the opportunity to work with hundreds of education leaders across the U.S. to help them use student voice and feedback to create more equitable and effective school systems. He is also a founding board member and story coach for the nonprofit Listen for a Change, which uses personal storytelling to help bridge divided communities.
Jimmy is a proud graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with degrees in Environmental Studies and Anthropology. He also holds a certificate of Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University. Jimmy currently resides in Oakland, California with his partner and their two fur babies, Noe and Max.
