While traditional training is an important first step, eventually your organization will need to examine its ongoing work through a lens of diversity and inclusion. You will most likely find a mix of progress and challenges, and often the best lessons come from a peer organization that has faced similar issues and can share its wisdom to help you navigate through your challenges. This case study examines the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s participation in the Peer Action Learning Network (PALN), a yearlong, expert-led engagement program run by the Council of Michigan Foundations and designed to strengthen participants’ capacity in diverse and inclusive leadership, management, and grant making. The structured, expert-led, peer-oriented nature of the Peer Action Learning Network created a safe space for participants to engage in candid conversation about diversity and inclusion, allowing the dialogue to go beyond learning and help them work through real-time challenges facing their organizations. It’s an effective model to consider as you identify and assess approaches to creating a more diverse and inclusive work environment.
